Lee Harvey Oswald, American U.S. Marine veteran, possible intelligence operative of either or both the U.S. and U.S.S.R., attempted assassin of General Edwin Walker (November 10, 1909 – October 31, 1993), either the lone assassin or one of a number of assassins of United States President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963 (October 18, 1939 - November 24, 1963), and assassin of Dallas police officer J. D. Tippit, was born at the old French Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana, on October 18, 1939, to Robert Edward Lee Oswald Sr. (1896–1939), who was a distant cousin of Confederate general Robert E. Lee and served in the Marines during World War I, and Marguerite Frances Claverie (1907–1981). Oswald was placed in juvenile detention at the age of 12 for truancy, during which time he was assessed by a psychiatrist as "emotionally disturbed", due to a lack of normal family life. While truant, he chose to spend his time in libraries and museums, and enjoyed his favorite television program I LED 3 LIVES, a television companion piece to the radio drama I WAS A COMMUNIST FOR THE FBI, about a man whose three lives were "average citizen, high level member of the communist party, and counterspy for the Federal Burea Of Investigation". After attending 22 schools in his youth, he quit repeatedly, and finally when he was 17, joined the Marines. Oswald was court-martialed twice while in the Marines, and jailed. Oswald was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps and defected to the Soviet Union in October 1959. He lived in the Belarusian city of Minsk until June 1962, at which time he returned to the United States with Marina, his Russian-born wife, eventually settling in Dallas. From 1959 to 1963, Oswald was involved in any one of a number of questionable activities, individuals and organizations that indicate he involved in one way or another with intelligence, counter-intelligence and covert operations. On April 10, 1963, by his own admission to his wife and according to the Warren Commsion, Oswald fired a Carcano rifle at U.S. Major General Edwin Walker , an extreme rightist and white supremacist, through a window from less than 100 feet (30 m) away as Walker sat at a desk in his Dallas home. The bullet struck the window-frame and Walker's only injuries were bullet fragments to the forearm. According to four federal government investigations, one municipal investigation, and a mock television trial, Oswald shot and killed Kennedy as the President traveled by motorcade through Dealey Plaza in the city of Dallas, Texas. Following the fatal shooting of Kennedy, Oswald was initially arrested for the murder of police officer J. D. Tippit, who was killed on a Dallas street about 45 minutes after Kennedy was shot. Oswald was later charged with the murder of Kennedy. He denied shooting anybody, saying that he was a "patsy". Two days later, while being transferred from the city jail to the county jail, Oswald was fatally shot by Dallas nightclub owner Jack Ruby in full view of television cameras broadcasting live.
